Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak

As millions in Egypt demand the immediate end of President Hosni Mubarak's 30-year rule, Mubarak pledges that he won't leave Egypt, accusing the opposition of having a secret agenda.

The Egyptian long-time president has defied the widespread calls for his resignation.

"This is my country. This is where I lived, I fought and defended its land, sovereignty and interests, and I will die on its soil," Mubarak said.

Instead, he has accused the opposition of carrying out a secret agenda by turning what he called once peaceful protests violent.

Mubarak said that he would not run in the election scheduled to be held in September but said he would stay in office until then.

After Mubarak's address, protesters said that February 4 would be the “Friday of departure” for the president and announced that they would be gathering at his palace on Friday afternoon.

Over five million Egyptians have taken to the streets across the country to pressure Mubarak to step down. Large crowds have massed in capital Cairo for the biggest anti-government protest in Egypt's recent history.

Tanks and troops have been stationed along the route of the march, but the army has promised not to use force against the demonstrators.

2/2/2011 8:42:08 PMI've underestimated how power hungry Hosni Mubarak is. Look at the chaos he has created in his own country. He claims he wants to die in Egypt, well no doubt someone will soon grant his wish one of these days, but not before he brings his country down with him. And all this because what? 30 years of being dictator wasn't enough for him to stand down when his people asked him to? Shame, shame.

2/2/2011 3:15:28 PMMubarak is responsible for bloodshed on the streets of Egypt. He had a chance not to let things get worse that what it has been, but the dictator decided to stay on and cause more bloodshed. All tyrants behave the same way, but wrath of God and people are going to get him.

Not about Egypt anymore
2/2/2011 10:58:12 This is not about Egypt anymore, If you study the decisions being taken by other middle east countries mainly by their PM's and Kings/Presidents/Princes you can see they are trying to prevent their own downfalls and chaotic situations like Mubarak is in now. Mubarak is not buying time for himself, Mubarak is buying time for the other Stooges. Because he knows he is going down 100[[]%], others have to make sure this influenza does not hit them

If not El Baradei, then whom?in reply to Bullet
2/2/2011 10:32:37 Egyptians know what they DON'T want, but they don't seem to know what they WANT. El Baradei has come forward to be the new leader, and he seems credible. Do you have any better suggestion?

egypt
2/2/2011 6:27:53 he is trying to buy time to reorginze and arrest those started the protests. He has done this before and survived. Egyptian will not end protest until he resigns and leave country. No one trust a tyrant to stay 6 months longer to regroup and install his son or soleiman to helm. level of revolution will increase after friday if he is still around. Next egytians will capture government buildings and government empoyees. It can get very ugly if mubarak decide to stay

2/2/2011 5:37:32 I don't think that the people of Egypt are interested in playing a game of semantics Mr. Mubarak, but I'm sure Egyptians would greatly appreciate you saving them the trouble by hanging yourself...

2/2/2011 5:26:58 Well if you want to stay in your country where most of its people hate you, them why not? I imagine many want you to be tried. Second how can a man who said loves his country so much can have mistaken his people and have humiliated the image of Egypt in the Region by becoming a slave to Israel and the West? Mubarak if you can be a man and fight for your people then step down and let a real leader put israel in its place. You will understand sooner or later.

2/2/2011 5:26:00 Mubarak must be deluded if he sees himself as a patriot. He is the traitor who betrayed Egyptians to please US and Israel. I hope we will see the end of Zionism and liberation from US hegemony, and we will shift away from corporate globalization, IMF imposed policies, privatization in which public assets (beitul maal) is passed on to private hands and people's sovereignty is undermined. I hope to see new indicators of progress such as the narrowing of the HAVEs and HAVENOTs gap. Etc., etc.

2/2/2011 4:55:40 if he doesnt leave then he is risking his life. With event in past 8 days unfolding chances of mubarak staying in power can not be longer than few days. Military will remove him to save egypt. Every day passes cost egyptians $100million . It is a costly decision for mubarak to stay.

2/2/2011 6:31:08 It's the Brits who created the mess in the M.E. and created zionist Israel. Mubarak will stay, reorganize his power-base and start a reign of terror the likes of which the M.E. has never seen, with the help of Israel of course. The closing of the Sewage Canal will lead to a larger conflict.
