My parents talked about being short of money, during our childhood (because the ill were stealing it all) and how Dad had to go and work in LIBYA teaching Haematology for a while...and a strange story about how his flight out had been blocked...but luckily, he had been chatting to a TURKISH pilot earlier...surrounding issues in Turkey...he saw the guy who was heading off to work...on AIR ITALIA...mentioned what had happened...and the guy got him on that flight to ROME...and out of LIBYA...it sounded like a near-death escape...and so I laughed that he must feel sympathy with those trapped in LIBYA now...to which he replied that he certainly did...and that the main desire of just about all of his medical students there, had been to leave the country as fast as possible...that was in the 1970s...he had been there many times...and there was another strange story about how he had fallen down a very deep pothole in the road and had been in there for about 6 hours until eventually rescued...(it sounds a bit 'ST JOHN' in retrospect)...
Additionally, Mum showed me the 'personal coffeetable book' as created by Cielo and Humphrey...a marvellous book...pricey to put together at $160 but an incredibly glossy and interesting book...it looked like something you could pick up at a quality bookshop...their photos of the Christmas holiday in LONDON...and the last photo was coded...they had taken a photo of their reflections in the window of a LONDON UNDERGROUND tube train...and the NO SMOKING sign above their heads was partially hidden to give the letters: NO ING
i laughed and pointed out how clever it was...and my mother laughed too...
anyway, after a STRAWBERRY SCONE PUDDING at the TOBY CARVERY shared with my mother, my father jollied up considerably...and as far as I can see, the whole afternoon was a success.
