I had a look at HENRY MAKOW's site this morning and the photo of H G WELLS reminded me of my GRANDFATHER GYDE...very much the same type of looks for that type of 'English gentleman'...we only have one photograph of him...that is all...seated in an armchair 'at home' - 19 THE MALL, SURBITON.
Anyway, that took me back to my childhood, staying at DADA's house (our childhood nickname for my Swiss grandmother)...to that tiny front living room...almost filled by a grand piano...light green armchair and sofa...light green carpet...TV which was hardly ever watched...and a small bookcase behind glass with two dolls in it...ANNE BOLEYN and HENRY VIII...
I used to get the dolls out and play with them...until one day my grandmother snatched them off me and forbade me to take them out again...this was because i was banging them together ferociously in a 'huge argument' which BOLEYN appeared to be winning even though her hair had come a bit loose from under her black velvet headdress...I was making up the dialogue for both characters as I went along...
Now I have no idea of which couple, i was modelling the above upon...but it wouldn't have come out of a vacuum - would it?
...and I can remember now, it was TODDY who wanted to upset her...he also told me to pull the doll's head off...which I did but luckily it could be pushed back in again...a plastic stopper at the end of it...
