Assassination attempt in Arizona
In case you hadn't already heard:

Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was shot in the head today when a gunman, 22-year-old Jared Loughner, opened fire at her "Congress on Your Corner" meeting. Giffords and several others were wounded, and 6 people are dead so far, including a federal judge and a 9-year-old child. Giffords is currently in surgery, and the surgeon is "as optimistic as it can get in this situation."
