Martin I think that counts as a salesman’s party!
I may live in Wiltshire but I’m from Stockport where the Goyt and the Thame form the Mersey. I lay claim to probably the biggest painting of a street party on this blog !! On VE Day 1945 (which we said was May 8th) I was 6 years old, and we had a big street party. Whatever the ration books could afford, topped up with fresh rabbit and chicken poached by our next door neighbour(!) The local press took photographs and, 10 years ago, I had a Stockport artist, Beryl Baguley, paint me an oil from one of the 8 x 10 black and white photographs. It now hangs on the wall of our master bedroom. All the people who lived there are represented. Bunting and flags and lots of lovely food that was normally quite scarce. Not to celebrate kings and queens, but to celebrate freedom from bombing and misery. And to look forward to dads coming home. I still feel that those were good, solid reaons for a party! Worth poaching a few rabbits for. But having a street party because a young man whose father still has a servant boiling 6 eggs for breakfast so that he can choose the one that is just right, is marrying a young lady who wears sheer, see-through dresses (front page Waily Femail today)- (is that a dress or a nightie?) I think not! “They” cant be seriously thinking of putting these two sitting side by side on two thrones can they?? Are we sure this isnt a pilot for series 2 of Black Adder? Now that had a really good Queen Liz in it! 3 cheers for Hull !
