Sunday 31 July 2011
University Church of St Mary the Virgin, 8pm
International Piano Festival and Summer Academy
Leslie Howard Piano Recital
Liszt Großes Konzertsolo, S176 Variations on the Motif from J S Bach’s 'Weinen, Klagen', S180
Sarabande and Chaconne on themes from Handel’s ‘Almira’, S181
Rachmaninoff Three Piano Pieces from November 1917: Andante ma non troppo, Oriental Sketch, Fragments
Sonata No. 2 in B flat minor, Op. 36 (original 1913 version)
The 2011 Festival opens, appropriately, with tributes to the two outstanding virtuoso composer pianists of their day. Liszt’s representation, in this, his bicentennial year, includes rarely heard homages to masters of the Baroque era – both Bach and Handel being recalled in period formats. Rachmaninoff is remembered through a sequence of valedictory miniatures and his first thoughts on the much revised second sonata.
