oh and i could add a bit more detail to fill out the picture...in order to explain to those like the CID...how that milk had gone bad-on-the-floor despite having only been spilt, the night before...let me explain....hotelu asystencki...a soviet bloc building...the freezing cold/ice/snow of winter in katowice...and they certainly knew about heating....the radiators were built to last...and were turned on during the winter and turned off in summer....guests/residents living in the flats, were unable to turn those radiators off or on...and they radiated heat, like nothing else....and so even in winter, sometimes you had to keep all of the windows, open - in your flat....despite there being snowdrifts out the front and backdoor of the building etc etc...because otherwise you'd fry....
anway, during the night-time...the local chemical factories etc etc...were allowed to take the filters off of their chimneys and therefore everybody in the city had been advised to keep their windows shut, at night because of the deadly fumes being emitted....known to be poisonous...a terrible pollution of the atmosphere....and so can you guess what i am going to say next?...evans used to take the warning seriously....and he would have kept his windows shut all night...and that is why the milk had already dried upon the floor and that is also why the 'awful smell' had been so difficult to locate, at first....however, it is distinctive to those who know what dried-spilt-milk smells like etc etc....go figure.
