remember that WILKO's sticky notes block?...now, how do I explain this simply?...imagine a bunch of filters or windows...imagine 'dimensions' to be a bit like that....and so within this visual explanation...we are looking at coming down a level...coming down a dimension....the parallel lines then change...to form a 'zigzag' having hit the dimension below....go figure.

 

imagine the two red lines as having been drawn upon a transparency...this is how they look in the 'higher dimension':

and when they enter the lower dimension...they change...nota bene the 'entry' and 'exit' points upon the top piece of pink paper:
