....and upon the topic of telegrams....BI ONLINE were to tell me that my version of the role of an ambassador was akin to a 'singalong telegram'...well, that is how eliza manningham-buller had described it...and that is what it used to be......the personal touch...rather than 'spymaster on the quiet' etc etc....how taxing to be 'undercover' and in relation to one of the UK's closest allies.......why not just go back to the old days?...everybody knew that eliza was working for MI5...well, some of them did - some of them, didn't - as she was to put it....anyway, she just had to go along, be polite and informative...handover/deliver the message and that was that...go figure.
