my first year teaching english in poland....i can remember how dificult it was to explain in class....the difference between 'could, 'might' and 'would' - my class were asking me the following question "what is the point of using 'might' at all - when you can use 'would'...'could'..." etc etc...
....and i can remember ending up doing what i normally did...'find a context and act out the difference'....
along the lines of .....when you say 'i might'...after somebody has asked you if you are going to attend a certain event....you do not need to say anything else because that closes the conversation down - tells the other person that you do not want to continue upon that subject...and depending upon how you pronounce it, in a negative or positive way - it is an indicator of the likelihood of whether or not you will attend but you do not want to be drawn into a discussion about it........however if you reply 'i would'....'would' collocates with 'but'....and so 'whoeveritis' expects a reason to follow e.g.
"i would....but i have to do something else" compared with:
"i might" which indicates that you want to close down the subject - without having to give a reason (because you haven't thought about it and so you haven't got anything more to say - or you don't want to give a reason etc etc).
oh i remember now...this is terrible...mark r and his 'I DON'T LIKE MONDAYS' program...."because there are no reasons - what reasons do there need to be told"...ingabot and rickson...do you see what the ill had done?...the mites/mights....without having to give a reason - because there are no reasons.
...and within the above context....'the mite of the right...and the right of the mite' takes on an entirely different meaning - doesn't it?
