i have just called ORANGE customer service...and they have told me that (my laptop just locked up for a second but i've just unlocked it) it was a new service called:

THE ROAMING SERVICE

...which i can look up on ORANGE WORLD - it is all about phoning from abroad...

The R will be a permanent feature of this particular model of ORANGE SAMSUNG mobile...
